Researchers develop model for identifying habitable zones around star

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Researchers searching the galaxy for planets that could pass the litmus test of sustaining water-based life must find whether those planets fall in a habitable zone, where they could be capable of having liquid water and sustaining life. New work, led by a team of Penn State researchers, will help scientists in that search.

Using the latest data, the Penn State Department of Geosciences team has developed an updated model for determining whether discovered planets fall within a habitable zone. The work builds on a prior model by James Kasting, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, to offer a more precise calculation of where habitable zones around a star can be found.

Comparing the new estimates with the previous model, the team found that habitable zones are actually farther away from the stars than previously thought.

"This has implications for finding other planets with life on them," said post-doctoral researcher Ravi kumar Kopparapu, a lead investigator on the study, which will be published described in Astrophysical Journal.

For the paper, Kopparapu and graduate student Ramses Ramirez used updated absorption databases of greenhouse gases (HITRAN and HITEMP). The databases have more accurate information on water and carbon dioxide than previously was available and allowed the research team to build new estimates from the groundbreaking model Kasting created 20 years ago for other stars.

Using that data and super computers at Penn State and the University of Washington, the team was able to calculate habitable zones around other stars. In the previous model, water and carbon dioxide were not being absorbed as strongly, so the planets had to be closer to the star to be in the habitable zone.

The new model has already found that some extrasolar planets previously believed to be in habitable zones may, in fact, not be.

The new model could also help scientists with research that is already under way. For example, the model could be used to see if planets the NASA Kepler mission discovers are within a habitable zone. The Kepler mission has found more than 2,000 potential systems that could be investigated.

The data could assist with a Habitable Zone Planet Finder a team of scientists in Penn State's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics is building. In 2011, that team received a National Science Foundation grant to develop an instrument to find planets in habitable zones. The precision spectrograph, which is under construction, will help scientists find Earth-sized planets in the Milky Way that could sustain liquid water.

In the future, the model could also be useful for research done with Terrestrial Planet Finder telescopes, which would guide users of the supersized telescopes on where to look.

While in the new model Earth appears to be situated at the very edge of the habitable zone, the model doesn't take into account feedback from clouds, which reflect radiation away from Earth and stabilize the climate.

In addition to Kopparapu, Ramirez and Kasting, researchers on the project are: Vincent Eymet, Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Bordeaux at the Universite de Bordeaux; Tyler D. Robinson and Victoria Meadows, University of Washington; Suvrath Mahadevan, Ryan C. Terrien and Rohit Deshpande, Penn State; and Shawn Domagal-Goldman, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Support for the research comes from NASA Astrobiology Institute's Virtual Planetary Laboratory. An interactive calculator to estimate Habitable Zones is online: depts.washington.edu/naivpl/content/hz-calculator.

BlackBerry World storefront goes live with music, TV shows and movies

Heads up, content lovers: you can now get your fix over at BlackBerry World, which has been updated with music, movies and TV shows for your perusal. As expected, prices are in line with industry norms, ranging from $8 to $12 for albums, and between $0.99 and $1.49 for individual tracks. Why are there redheads? Birds might hold the clues

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Red coloration -- historically seen as costly in vertebrates -- might represent some physiological benefit after all, according to research published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

Pheomelanin, which is responsible for red hair and freckles in humans and orange and chestnut coloration in other animals, is known to increase the damage to skin cells and melanoma risk when present in large amounts. Furthermore, its creation involves the consumption of glutathione, a beneficial antioxidant.

In an attempt to unearth the factors favoring the evolution of pheomelanin in spite of its costs, Ismael Galv?n and Anders P. M?ller of the University of Paris-Sud examined the survival from one breeding season to the next of a wild European population of barn swallows, as well as the annual survival rates of 58 species of American birds.

A recent hypothesis claims that the consumption of cysteine (a component of glutathione) that occurs when pheomelanin is produced can be beneficial under conditions of low stress. Cysteine, which is mainly acquired through diet, can be toxic at high levels, so the production of pheomelanin may help to sequester excess quantities of this amino acid.

Galv?n and M?ller measured birds' blood levels of uric acid and analyzed the coloration of their chestnut throat feathers (an indication of pheomelanin content). When they compared birds that had similar uric acid levels (and therefore similar capacities to excrete excess amino acids), they found that both the European barn swallows and the American birds with larger amounts of pheomelanin in their feathers survived better.

This study is the first to propose that the costs/benefits of pheomelanin may depend on prevailing environmental conditions, and its results suggest that the production of this pigment may even be beneficial in some circumstances. Given that all higher vertebrates, including humans, present pheomelanin in skin, pelage, and plumage, Galv?n and M?ller's findings increase the scant current knowledge on the physiological consequences of pheomelanin and open new avenues for research that will help us understand the evolution of pigmentation.

They Might Be Giants: Till My Head Falls Off

They Might Be Giants are well-known for their crazier themes and lyrics, and also for that totally-annoying-in-its-entirety Malcom in the Middle theme song. But occasionally, there's a little dark sincerity poking out of their work, and "Till My Head Falls Off" is a perfect, catchy example. More »

Underworld boss shot outside Bulgarian courthouse

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? A convicted underworld boss was shot and seriously wounded in broad daylight outside a courthouse in Bulgaria's capital on Tuesday, sending panicked people on a busy downtown street scrambling for cover.

The shooter or shooters opened fire at around 9:30 a.m., probably from an apartment building across the street from the Sofia Courthouse, police said. Minutes after the shooting, a fire broke out at the top floor of the building, suggesting that the assailant or assailants may have set a fire to hide their tracks.

Zlatomir Ivanov and one of his bodyguards were both hit as they walked up the stairs to enter the court for an appeals hearing. The bodyguard managed to return fire but was wounded in the leg. Police said Ivanov was undergoing surgery after suffering four gunshot wounds in his legs, arm and stomach.

Ivanov, 44, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison after being convicted of leading an organized criminal group engaging in illegal drugs trade. He appealed the sentence and has been under house arrest since then to recuperate from earlier surgery.

Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, a former top cop, said that "the site gives easy access for a shooting," and added that if Ivanov had been in custody, he would have had protection.

"I have always claimed that persons who have first been sentenced will be much healthier if they stay in custody," Borisov said while addressing a meeting of businessmen at a hotel near the shooting site.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement that "such a brutal act of violence ... in an area of major state institutions and public buildings in a way threatening the life and health of many citizens is a matter of serious worry and concern."

Bulgaria, which joined the European Union in 2007, is still under pressure from Brussels to erase deep-rooted corruption and organized crime that has plagued the country more than two decades after it shook off communism.

How to Find Or Be Passionate Talent [4 Ways]

In the movie?Serendipity, Dean says to Jonathan:

?You know the Greeks didn?t write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man dies: ?Did he have passion???

In my experience as a hiring manager, I look for individuals who possess passion for their work. This is crucial to help ensure a right match is not only made for the job but for the organization?s culture as well.

serendipityToday, there are a number of avenues hiring managers can leverage to learn about and evaluate job seekers. When doing so, I look at four major areas for signs of passion:

Resume

  • History: I review the job candidate?s history to see what they?ve done and what they?re doing, looking for patterns of activity that indicate increasing roles and responsibilities. While these may not directly indicate passion, they reflect stability and a predictable career path. If the career path doesn?t look normal, I look for indications of why their occupation took a left turn.
  • Activities: I look for activity outside of the office that support continuing education ? specifically the pursuit of advanced degrees and certifications.
  • Achievements: It?s important to look for awards and other achievements, indicating how they have excelled, specifically individual, leadership and industry-specific awards.?

Social media

  • Profile:?On social profiles that reflect an individual?s occupation, I look for indications of pride. For example, on LinkedIn I would look for awards, speaking engagements or promotions.

  • Engagement: Passion can be seen in what they share about their vocation. Individuals who share information, articles and news that relate to their job stand out as potential experts in their field.
  • Groups: Participating in?social media groups?affiliated with their field shows that they?re interested in learning and sharing knowledge with their peers.
  • Online Activities: Blogging activities (whether they manage their own or participate in other occupational-related blogs) reflect a deeper connection to their chosen profession. The extra time spent by these individuals may demonstrate a dedication to their field.

Interview

  • Presentation: I look for a candidate who presents themselves in a?confident and energetic manner?? proud of their skills, experience and accomplishments.
  • Involvement: Individuals who employ their skills outside of the office may reflect passion. Advancing their understanding through self-study, reading and hobbies, as well as utilizing their skills in volunteer or community activity may reflect that a job is more than just a paycheck.

Reference checks

  • Professional contacts: I listen to what former employers say about a candidate?s work product and work ethic for signs of passion and dedication.
  • Personal contacts: Personal references can be valuable as they may offer a more candid look into a job candidate?s interests and background. Personal references have the ability to reveal a candidate?s passion from their everyday life outside of the office.

While these areas are not absolute for finding passionate talent, they may narrow the field to those candidates who you should consider for the job. What do you look and listen for to judge a job seeker?s passion? Let us know in the comments below.

Bloody turmoil erupts in Egypt over death sentences

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 22 people died on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, adding to bloody street turmoil confronting Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said after the violence. The state news agency quoted a general as saying the military aimed to "establish calm and stability in Port Said and to protect public institutions".

The unrest began with nationwide rallies on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, a democratic uprising that protesters now accuse Mursi of betraying by ramming through an Islamist-hued constitution.

While anniversary-related violence subsided, a new flare-up hit Port Said after a court sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths of 74 people after a local soccer match on February 1, 2012, many of them fans of the visiting team.

Residents ran wildly through the streets of Port Said in rage that men from their city had been blamed for the stadium disaster, and gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

State television, citing the Health Ministry, said 22 people were killed and more than 200 wounded. Security sources said at least two of the dead were policemen.

A witness said some men stormed a police station in Port Said, where protesters lit tires in the street, sending black smoke funneling into the air.

At least nine people were killed in clashes with police on Friday, mainly in the port of Suez where the army has also deployed. Hundreds were injured as police rained down tear gas on protesters armed with stones and some with petrol bombs.

The schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians is hurting efforts by Mursi, freely elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a slide in Egypt's currency.

The political strife and lack of security that has blighted the Arab world's most populous country over much of the post-Mubarak era is casting a chilling shadow over a parliamentary election expected to start in April.

Highlighting tensions, the opposition National Salvation Front coalition called for a government of national unity and an early presidential vote among other demands. It said it would call for more protests next Friday and could boycott the parliamentary election if its demands are not met.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he pledged.

His supporters say his critics do not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

VICTIMS' RELATIVES CHEER

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Cairo's Al Ahly and local team al-Masri.

Families of victims in court cheered and wept for joy when Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid read a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

A total of 73 people have been standing trial. Other rulings will be issued on March 9, the judge said.

One relative in the court shouted: "God is greatest." Outside the Al Ahly club in Cairo, fans also cheered. They had threatened more violence unless the death penalty was meted out.

Thousands took to the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other cities on Friday to protest against what they call the authoritarianism of Mursi's rule. Protesters in Cairo were again hurling stones at police lines in Cairo on Saturday.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt and near where youths stoned police.

"PURSUING CRIMINALS"

Ahmed Salama, 28, a protester camped out with dozens of others in Tahrir, said: "The protests will continue until we realize all the demands of the revolution - bread, freedom and social justice."

In a statement in response to Friday's violence, Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". He urged Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing views peacefully.

The president met on Saturday with the National Defence Council, which includes senior ministers and security officials, to discuss the spate of violence.

In a televised statement, the National Salvation Front said it was holding Mursi responsible.

The Front was formed from disparate groups last year when Mursi awarded himself extra powers and fast-tracked an Islamist-flavored constitution to a referendum, opposed by the Front although the document was passed in the popular vote.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on his Twitter account.

Until the Front was formed, the opposition had struggled to unite and their vote had been split at presidential and parliamentary polls, helping Islamists. The last parliament was dissolved based on court order, demanding a new vote this year.

Mustapha Kamal Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said the latest violence reflected the frustration of many liberal-minded Egyptians and others.

"The state of polarization between Islamists and others is most likely to continue and will have a very negative impact on the state's politics, security and economy," he said.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose among Egyptians two years ago has unraveled, triggering bloody street battles last month.

Family using billboards to find kidney donor for daughter

Mandie Hale has spent her entire life in and out of hospitals after a bout with E. coli at age two sent her into kidney failure.

Now 22, Hale, from Snellville, Ga., is nearing the end of her chances with dialysis because of the toll the treatments have taken on her body. Spurred on by the urgency of time and the unexpected generosity of complete strangers, Hale and her family are making a bigger-than-life attempt to finally find a kidney donor match.

Hale's face and name are now on a series of billboards throughout the Atlanta area with the plea "Find A Kidney Match for Mandie. Save Her Life!" and the phone number of her personal donor coordinator.

The E. coli and subsequent infections coupled with the long-term dialysis and frequent hospitalizations and surgeries have weakened Hale's vascular system to the point where her veins are very brittle and she's unable to have blood drawn.

"The last time I went into the hospital, about a month ago, we had a really big scare because I didn't have any way to do dialysis and they were worried my last graft wasn't going to work," Hale told ABCNews.com. "When that happened it freaked us all out, and my mom is on a mission to do whatever it takes."

Hale's mom is Joanna Cotes; she donated a kidney to her daughter when Hale was 14. Hale's body rejected the kidney, however, and it was removed after just five years.

Not long after, Hale had a series of seizures and a stroke soon after that forced doctors to remove her original kidneys and put her on a treatment of dialysis four times a week, with each treatment lasting approximately three hours.

With options running out for her daughter, Cotes reached out to the owner of a billboard on the property where she works to place a local advertisement. She offered to pay for the billboard but the company, Fairway Outdoor Advertising, had another idea.

The South Carolina-based company instead offered Cotes a deal to put her daughter's plea on 12 of their LED digital billboards in the greater Atlanta area, at no charge.

"With my mom, I'm not surprised. That woman does everything for me. If she could give me her other kidney, she would," Hale said. "With the billboard company, it's unexplainable honestly. That's money they're pretty much giving up. I don't have words."

For Fairway, after hearing Hale's story, the opportunity to help was a no-brainer.

"We said we are in it. We are absolutely all in it," a spokeswoman said. "We just felt that we could help her out in a great sense if we were to reach out to the Atlanta community at large instead of just a display in an area that didn't have as much of an impact."

"We just absolutely could not and would not ever think of charging for something like this because it's so important to help," she added, noting the company plans to leave the billboards up indefinitely, as long as they have space and Hale is still searching for a donor.

Hale, whose long history with the disease makes finding a match more difficult, says the donor team has been so overwhelmed with calls they've had to bring in extra staff to help.

While no match has been found yet, Hale has every reason to continue searching. She is engaged to be married to her boyfriend of seven years, Mike Mcwillson, but is waiting to tie the knot.

"I want to be healthy and not worrying about dialysis," she said.

Mandeville city workers will continue to get free health insurance ...

To the applause of municipal employees in the audience, the Mandeville City Council Thursday night opted to continue providing health insurance at no cost to city workers rather than have them pay for a portion of the premiums. The council asked Mayor Donald Villere to use money the city will save through a reduction in the cost of its workman's compensation coverage to help offset the higher rates for employee health insurance.

The city two weeks ago was poised to have employees start paying for a portion of the cost of their health insurance coverage. Villere presented the council several options, the most popular of which would have required employees to contribute $11.54 per bi-weekly pay period to maintain their existing coverage, which currently costs them nothing. Under that plan, the employee could add his of her family for $46 per pay period. Another option would have kept the employees' cost for the insurance at zero, but would have required deductibles and provided less coverage.

At its Jan. 10 meeting, the council discussed the issue but delayed a decision. On Thursday night, the council heard from several community members who lauded the city government's workforce and urged the council to cover the cost of the rising premiums, which Villere said would amount to about $120,000 this year. Part of that increase could be offset by savings of $87,000 in the city's workman's compensation coverage, he said. And, officials noted that the city saved about $100,000 a year ago when it switched its provider to United Health Care.

Former City Council members Jack McGuire and Jerry Coogan both urged the council to pony up to cover the higher insurance costs rather than passing the increase on to the workers. McGuire noted that Mandeville is one of the wealthiest cities in the state with a median household income of over $90,000, yet some of its employees are at income levels that put them dangerously close to the poverty level.

John Endres, an employee of the city's planning department, said good employees will leave for greener pastures if their compensation packages are reduced. "You're not going to have anybody who's going to stay," he said. "You can hire them, but they won't stay."

Calling the city employees the "backbone of our community," Councilwoman Carla Buchholz urged her council colleagues to cover the cost of employee health insurance "as long as the city can afford to pay" for it. The city has about 125 employees.

In agreeing to side with Buchholz, Councilmen Rick Danielson and Clay Madden said the city needs to plan ahead for the time when it may not be able to afford to continue to pay for the entire cost of employee health coverage. The council's approval was unanimous.

Currently, the city picks up 100 percent of the cost of its employees' health coverage, an expense of just over $2 million a year. An employee can add his or her family to the plan for $21.62 per pay period. The council's decision Thursday night, which drew an ovation from about a dozen employees in the audience, leaves that structure unchanged.

Council also gave a thumbs up to renew worker's compensation insurance with John W. Doussouy & Co. Inc. The total premium for 2013 is estimated at $133,309. The city budgeted $220,290 in the 2013 budget for that coverage, creating a savings of just under $87,000, which will be allocated to offset health insurance costs.

Outsourcing To A Call Centre - How Will My Company Benefit ...

24.01

Many companies can benefit from outsourcing to a call centre. A professional call centre is able to provide you with a bespoke and comprehensive telephone answering service, which allows you and your staff members to get on with your business day without the constant interruption of telephone calls.

Many telephone calls that you will receive in your business may be either cold callers or non-priority calls which can be attended to at a later date.

Occasionally you have a very important business call, but how can you tell these apart from your other callers?

You may lose a business opportunity simply by not answering the phone to this caller. On the other hand, your staff member may answer this call but may not attend to the caller in the most appropriate way ? and the caller may feel like their business would be better welcomed elsewhere.

Your current staff are probably overworked and answering the constant telephone calls will be a burden to them. Outsourcing to a professional call centre will allow your staff to focus solely on their business activities, rather than answering any unwanted calls.

Important telephone calls can be transferred directly to the appropriate landline or even your mobile phone if this is required. This means that you benefit from a more productive work day where only the most important calls will come through to your mobile for you to answer. In turn, you will never have to worry about missing a business opportunity again.

Bill Hader to take on David Hasselhoff character in "Baywatch" Movie

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Bill Hader will star in Paramount's film reboot of "Baywatch," the 1990s TV show starring David Hasselhoff as the leader of a team of lifeguards.

Robert Ben Garant, who co-created "Reno 911!" and is directing "Baywatch," told TheWrap that Hader will play the Hasselhoff character.

Hasselhoff will make a cameo in the film, which like "Reno 911!" will take a faux serious tone to an absurd subject. Just as "Reno" parodied the over-dramatization of shows like "Cops," this will parody the 1990s hit TV show set on the beach.

Yes, Pamela Anderson also will have a cameo.

The plot follows lifeguards exploring an oil rig of the Malibu coast that turns out to be a meth lab. Jeremy Garelick and Peter Tolan both wrote drafts of the script, which Ben Garant has revisited.

"They're so excited they made us shoot a trailer and the script isn't even done," Ben Garant said.

Ben Garant said they are aiming for an April start date.

The director is at Sundance for "Hell Baby," a mock horror film he co-wrote and co-directed with "Reno 911!" co-creator Thomas Lennon, who stars alongside Leslie Bibb and Rob Corddry. He and Lennon also have written the "Night at the Museum" films together.

Hader is in his eighth season on "Saturday Night Live" and has a number of movies primed for 2013 release. He plays a supporting role in "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His" and "Hers," a two film-project about a troubled marriage where one film is told from each person's perspective. He also has a supporting role in CBS Films' "The Do List," due for a summer release, and he has lent his voice to a trio of animated films - "Turbo," "Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers" and "Me and My Shadow."

He is also starring in "The Skeleton Twins" with former "SNL" castmate Kristin Wiig, a project shooting now in New York.

Testing brain pacemakers to zap Alzheimer's damage

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It has the makings of a science fiction movie: Zap someone's brain with mild jolts of electricity to try to stave off the creeping memory loss of Alzheimer's disease.

And it's not easy. Holes are drilled into the patient's skull so tiny wires can be implanted into just the right spot.

A dramatic shift is beginning in the disappointing struggle to find something to slow the damage of this epidemic: The first U.S. experiments with "brain pacemakers" for Alzheimer's are getting under way. Scientists are looking beyond drugs to implants in the hunt for much-needed new treatments.

The research is in its infancy. Only a few dozen people with early-stage Alzheimer's will be implanted in a handful of hospitals. No one knows if it might work, and if it does, how long the effects might last.

Kathy Sanford was among the first to sign up. The Ohio woman's early-stage Alzheimer's was gradually getting worse. She still lived independently, posting reminders to herself, but no longer could work. The usual medicines weren't helping.

Then doctors at Ohio State University explained the hope ? that constant electrical stimulation of brain circuits involved in memory and thinking might keep those neural networks active for longer, essentially bypassing some of dementia's damage.

Sanford decided it was worth a shot.

"The reason I'm doing it is, it's really hard to not be able, sometimes, to remember," Sanford, 57, said from her Lancaster, Ohio, home.

Her father is blunter.

"What's our choice? To participate in a program or sit here and watch her slowly deteriorate?" asked Joe Jester, 78. He drives his daughter to follow-up testing, hoping to spot improvement.

A few months after the five-hour operation, the hair shaved for her brain surgery was growing back and Sanford said she felt good, with an occasional tingling that she attributes to the electrodes. A battery-powered generator near her collarbone powers them, sending the tiny shocks up her neck and into her brain.

It's too soon to know how she'll fare; scientists will track her for two years.

"This is an ongoing evaluation right now that we are optimistic about," is how Ohio State neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Rezai cautiously puts it.

More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's or similar dementias, and that number is expected to rise rapidly as the baby boomers age. Today's drugs only temporarily help some symptoms. Attempts to attack Alzheimer's presumed cause, a brain-clogging gunk, so far haven't panned out.

"We're getting tired of not having other things work," said Ohio State neurologist Dr. Douglas Scharre.

The new approach is called deep brain stimulation, or DBS. While it won't attack Alzheimer's root cause either, "maybe we can make the brain work better," he said.

Implanting electrodes into the brain isn't new.

Between 85,000 and 100,000 people around the world have had DBS to block the tremors of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. The continuous jolts quiet overactive nerve cells, with few side effects. Scientists also are testing whether stimulating other parts of the brain might help lift depression or curb appetite among the obese.

It was in one of those experiments that Canadian researchers back in 2003 stumbled onto the Alzheimer's possibility. They switched on the electrical jolts in the brain of an obese man and unlocked a flood of old memories. Continuing his DBS also improved his ability to learn. He didn't have dementia, but the researchers wondered if they could spur memory-making networks in someone who did.

But wait a minute.

Alzheimer's doesn't just steal memories. It eventually robs sufferers of the ability to do the simplest of tasks. How could stimulating a brain so damaged do any good?

A healthy brain is a connected brain. One circuit signals another to switch on and retrieve the memories needed to, say, drive a car or cook a meal.

At least early in the disease, Alzheimer's kills only certain spots. But the disease's hallmark gunky plaques act as a roadblock, stopping the "on" switch so that healthy circuits farther away are deactivated, explained Dr. Andres Lozano, a neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital whose research sparked the interest.

So the plan was to put the electrodes into hubs where brain pathways for memory, behavior, concentration and other cognitive functions converge, to see if the jolts reactivate those silenced circuits, added Ohio State's Rezai.

"It's like going through Grand Central Station and trying to affect all the trains going in and coming out," he said.

Lozano's team found the first clue that it's possible by implanting six Alzheimer's patients in Canada. After at least 12 months of continuous stimulation, brain scans showed a sign of more activity in areas targeted by Alzheimer's. Suddenly, the neurons there began using more glucose, the fuel for brain cells.

"It looked like a blackout before. We were able to turn the lights back on in those areas," Lozano said.

While most Alzheimer's patients show clear declines in function every year, one Canadian man who has had the implants for four years hasn't deteriorated, Lozano said, although he cautioned that there's no way to know whether that's due to the DBS.

The evidence is preliminary and will take years of study to prove, but "this is an exciting novel approach," said Dr. Laurie Ryan of the National Institutes of Health's aging division, which is funding a follow-up study.

In research under way now:

?The Toronto researchers have teamed with four U.S. medical centers ? Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida and Arizona's Banner Health System ? to try DBS in a part of the brain called the fornix, one of those memory hubs, in 40 patients. Half will have their electrodes turned on two weeks after the operation and the rest in a year, an attempt to spot any placebo effect from surgery.

?At Ohio State, Rezai is implanting the electrodes into a different spot, the frontal lobes, that his own DBS work suggests could tap into cognition and behavior pathways. That study will enroll 10 participants including Sanford.

Surgery back in October was Sanford's first step. Then it was time to fine-tune how the electrodes fire. She took problem-solving tests while neurologist Scharre adjusted the voltage and frequency and watched her reactions.

Sanford was cheered to see her test scores climb a bit during those adjustments. She said she knows there are no guarantees, but "if we can beat some of this stuff, or at least get a leading edge on it, I'm in for the whole deal."

The Obvious and Easy Self-Improvement Tip | Healthy Lifestyle Plus

Webmaster | January 18, 2013 (14 hours ago) | no comments

The Obvious and Easy Self-Improvement TipThe self-improvement movement is well documented already with lots of information on how to improve yourself and be a better human being.

Often there is a regurgitation of the same content in the area of self-improvement, and although that is worthy, it does not truly offer anything essentially different.

Repetitive messages are still of value of course and often we see a similar message get delivered across the industry anyway and that is still important.

To say self-improvement tips could be categorized as being easy might be understating the challenges that go hand in hand with personal development and absolute personal change.

Since it may be looked upon as being just a generic term, what exactly is self-improvement anyway?

Self-improvement visibly states that whatever is being improved is done from inside, or by, the individual. In other words its not external to the person, it?s an inner job and it?s a decision that is generated by that person. The question often involves the beginning point of the self-improvement process and what it in fact entails.

Human beings, at least in contemporary society, tend to evaluate success on or by demonstrated results. In a nutshell its obvious to see that in today?s fast paced demanding world that functioning is measured and is all about demonstrated or proven results.

Using this criteria then, how exactly does an area like self-improvement get calculated? Society very clearly has not delineated, defined, or valued self-improvement enough as evidenced in the questions that arise from trying to define it!

And that is the point of view that is being presented here. Beginning the self-improvement process requires courage and a steely resolve. It amounts to doing unfamiliar things that in so many ways will not get recognized or even acknowledged from the outside world.

That of course does not amount to the reality that changes won?t ever be seen by others, it?s just that in a fundamental sense, the results are not as apparent. That being said, all parties involved may not know how to delineate them however!

A different approach needs to be undertaken complete with a mentality that is focused on internal acknowledgment and not the need for acknowledgment from others. Get the process correct and the outcomes will come.

It needs to be remembered that this process is labelled ?self? improvement. With this understanding you open yourself up to the free infinite possibilities that exist in life.

That is the base or starting point. Self-improvement then, like anything done in life, is an inside job. You need to recognize where you are going and how you are going to get there. Once you have the foundation to work from all that is necessary is a determination and genuine aspiration to want to progressively improve and develop yourself further.

Now back to the easy self-improvement tips spoken about a little earlier and where they might be. If you are asking that question or questioning where they are, read the words again and remind yourself that you dwell in a reality that needs proof, that seeks visible results, and seeks evidence.

Reading between the lines in life is the key. The self-improvement tip that this article overwhelmingly wants to accentuate, is the importance in life of preparation and understanding the ?process? of life.

Education: What Lurks Below The Surface? | Education News

Progressive John Dewey?s and his followers plan to ?transform America? marks the decline of American education and all that it wrong with it. Bruce Price gives us some practical recommendations on how to provide a superior education for our children that requires parental vigilance and engagement to point our schools and our children in a better direction

BY BRUCE DEITRICK PRICE -

Education is a mystifying field. You can study it for years but remain forever on the surface.

The media, for example, endlessly discuss every aspect of public education. But nothing improves; and nobody explains why we spend so much money but get mediocre results. (Note: many pundits believe the public schools are now so bad they are a threat to this country?s survival.)

Here?s my main theme these days. We must look deeper. Until we grapple with the underlying causes, nothing will improve. We have to move inside the machine and figure out how it works.

One thing we know for certain is that our education stats are dismal. So let?s stay focused on international tests, statistics, SAT scores, and everything else that quantifies our malaise. These unpleasant facts should be our main reference point.

The second thing we know is that a LOT of activity is taking place. Tens of millions of children, tens of thousands of classrooms, billions of books, more than a million teachers. Everything is busy-busy-busy. But then we come back to the central fact: somebody neglected to make all this activity smart and productive.

Instead, we have too much activity that is like a mime pulling a rope. The rope is imaginary; the mime is not actually ?pulling.? In a similar way, a lot of the education in our public schools is theatre; it?s mime. Nobody is being educated. The stats prove that.

Now, let?s zoom in on the essential components of this activity, these being what professors of education call ?theories and methods.? Typically, somebody has a flashy theory that children should be taught a subject a certain way; other professors devise methods incorporating the theory. Theory A leads to Method B which is the basis of Textbook C. Obviously, dumb theories will spawn dumb curricula.

My conclusion, after years of wrestling with the most popular theories and methods found in the public schools, is that most of them are flawed. In fact, they are shockingly second-rate. It?s as though you hired a tone deaf person to compose your corporate song. How did we got into this bind?

John Dewey (d. 1952) and his followers were Progressives who wanted to fundamentally transform the United States. Dewey and friends were also professors of education; naturally they thought of using the schools to achieve their ideological goals. The plan was simple: first indoctrinate teachers; have the teachers indoctrinate the kids.

When Dewey?s educators selected classroom methods, the primary concern was social engineering, not traditional education. That?s the crucial shift. We?re still living with the aftershocks. Simply put, Dewey cared more about children playing harmoniously together than he did about what each one learned.

Meanwhile, parents usually demanded more traditional education, not less. They wanted as much learning as their kids could absorb. Thus, the sides were drawn. For 75 years, we have had Education Wars.

How do we escape from this wasteful and paralyzing conflict? In an ideal world, the social engineers give up their UNAUTHORIZED experiments and get back to teaching kids the skills and knowledge that everyone needs.

Unfortunately, that may not be happening any time soon. Common Core Curriculum seems to be another wave of the same old indoctrination. However, there is still much we can do. Americans can be better educated about education. Don?t expect the Education Establishment to reveal their dark secrets. Parents need to do a little homework, that?s all.

Parents can learn to recognize the names of the flawed methods used in our schools, and then fight to eliminate them.

Whole Word (a/k/a sight-words) is the worst way to learn to read. Insist on systematic phonics.

Reform Math (which has 12 separate curricula including Everyday Math) is the worst way to learn math; try instead Singapore Math, Saxon Math, or similar.

Constructivism is a fancy word for preventing teachers from teaching, so that students are forced to discover facts for themselves. It might work sometimes. Usually, the result is that kids know less foundational knowledge.

There are many suspect methods: Project-Based Learning; Prior Knowledge; Learning Styles; Cooperative Learning; Multiculturalism; Self-esteem, for starters. Despite clever names and glorious claims, these things tend to retard education. The stats prove that.

The Education Establishment is clever at keeping us distracted and confused. We end up staring at the surface they want us to see. No more. Let?s look at the warped gears inside the machine, and replace them.

About or from a variety of publications on EducationViews.org

?The quality and variety of the selections you will find on EducationViews.org is second-to-none on the internet today. Since 1997 we have been providing this service at no cost to education professionals, the public in general and policy makers. Hope you enjoy the articles and commentary. Please forward us to your friends and associates. EducationViews.org is maybe the most effective way to transforming educators. The daily email offers a direct and easy way for busy teachers to grow philosophically. I was skeptical, but once you open the email and decide to read a story, you are hooked and it becomes a daily ritual to check out what?s happening. Educating teachers as to what is really going on in the schools opens up a new worldview and vision of thinking most have not been exposed to. The end result, better informed teachers who have a more effective understanding of the principles that make academic achievement a reality. Great job. The more email addresses of educators you get on your list, the bigger the impact and the more kids you will positively influence.

How to Turn a Road Trip into a Family-Friendly Vacation ...

make the roadtrip family friendlyWhile the classic college road trip is an idea embedded in popular culture, road trips do not have to be for college students only. In fact, a road trip can make a great vacation for families. Not only is it something new, but it is inexpensive and easy to plan. If you are looking for your next vacation idea, consider a road trip that the whole family can partake in. The following tips will help you make sure your kids stay safe and entertained along the way.

Get Your Kids Involved

To make your kids excited for the upcoming trip, let them in on the planning process. Give them a say as to where you will go on your road trip. Since you will make many stops along the way, you can accommodate your children?s wishes, as well as yours, when it comes to determining what places to visit. The more involved they feel, the more excited they will be about the vacation.

Drive Safe

It is impossible to know what may happen on the road, so you should prepare beforehand in case of any potential emergencies. Make sure your car is in good shape by having your oil, wipers, and brakes checked before the trip. Also consider signing up for a motor club, which not only has great discounts and information on travel, but offers roadside assistance in case your car breaks down or you run into trouble.

Bring Snacks and Activities

While your kids will love visiting the destinations you have chosen, the time spent in the car between each new place can be frustrating. To keep your kids occupied and happy, bring some snacks for between meals. Water bottles, juice boxes, fruit snacks, and granola bars are a few essential items to have on hand that will not go bad if left in the car. Make sure to pack some activities too. Buy a few travel-sized games to bring along, or even make a trip to the toy store so that your kids can pick out a game they will be really excited about.

Help Your Kids Learn

Whether you visit a local place or somewhere far away, your trip can be as educational as it is fun. A road trip is a great way to teach your kids about some of the well-known landmarks in your area. They will learn about local history and more about the place they live in. If you are visiting somewhere far however, a national park or other national landmark will help them learn about some of the places the country is known for.

Get Directions

Whether you prefer a GPS or a traditional map, it is important to be familiar with your route before you get in the car. Having some idea of where you are at all times will give you perspective should you make a wrong turn along the way. With children in the car, the last thing you want to do is increase travel time by getting lost on your route.

A road trip can be more than just a college adventure ? it can be something for the whole family to enjoy. Save money on your next getaway by planning a family road trip, and you will have one of your best vacations yet.

Lindsay T. often writes blogs about travel on behalf of Allstate Motor Club, an auto club that provides emergency roadside assistance?and a variety of other travel services. Visit Allstate Motor Club?for more on travel deals, driving resources, and membership information.

France says has faith Algerian government can end crisis

PARIS (Reuters) - France has total confidence in the Algerian government to resolve a standoff at a desert gas facility where dozens of Western and Algerian hostages are being held, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Thursday.

Le Drian said he would travel to Berlin in the next few hours, however, to talk to his German counterpart about France's military campaign against Islamist rebels in Mali, which the hostage-takers in Algeria say must end.

A French government source told Reuters that Paris would ask its international partners for more military backing for its Mali campaign, but would not say if that meant sending soldiers to back the 1,400 French troops on the ground there.

"We are going to ask today for the support of other countries," the source said. "We do not necessarily need troops at the moment but the African armies will need to be supported once they get involved in the conflict."

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was expected to press the issue with European Union foreign ministers at an emergency meeting in Brussels on Thursday where it was agreed to push on with a plan to send hundreds of military personnel to train Malian government forces in fighting the rebels.

Even before the Algerian hostage crisis raised the stakes for France's campaign in Mali, opposition politicians expressed concern that France has been left alone to fight Mali's Islamist rebels, with Western partners limiting their involvement to offering logistical, surveillance and medical equipment and some cargo planes.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he spoke twice on Wednesday evening to his Algerian counterpart and they agreed that the situation in northern Mali and Algeria merited the attention of the international community.

Facebook settings to tweak for Graph Search

12 hrs.

Tweaking your?Activity Log just became a necessary and tedious new part of being a Facebook user. Thanks to the service's new Graph Search feature, all that profile info you've painstakingly updated over the years (employer, home town, relationship status, movie likes, etc) and all the photos you've added over time, are now to become data in a database of the social network's trillion connections between a billion users.?

Before Facebook rolls out this new search engine to the masses, it is rolling it out in a very limited beta to select users.

And while those guinea pigs test it out, the rest of us will have the chance to tweak a few things to ensure that our dirty laundry isn't so easily accessible. Granted, all this data has been available to our friends forever. We put it out there for them to see. All Facebook is doing is indexing that info for our friends, and friends of friends. No new data is being added and the general public won't have access to the name of your mother or the college you attended.

But, if you would rather not have your friends of friends be able to search for "single women in new york from kansas who like big bang theory" and come up with your name, you'll want to take a closer look at your profile.?

First off, you might want to limit who can search for you in Facebook. To stop friends of friends from seeking you out:

  1. Click the lock icon on the top right of your profile.?
  2. Click Edit next to "Who can look up your timeline by name."
  3. Select Friends from the drop-down menu that appears.?
  4. Click Close.

Next up, it's time to check out your Activity Log and make sure you're happy about all those photos your friends have tagged you in, the likes you've shared and the places you've checked in. The tedious part here is that you'll need to review every item ever entered on your timeline. So, settle in, cause this could take a while.?

  1. Click the lock icon on the top right of your profile.?
  2. Click Use Activity Log next to "Review all your posts and things you're tagged in."
  3. Click on the icon of two people's heads to the right of any post, like, tag, comment, photo, etc. that you'd prefer to limit visibility.?
  4. Click Report/Remove Tag (in the event of a photo; language changes depending on type of entry).
  5. Select "I want this photo removed from Facebook."
  6. Click Continue. A message will be sent to the person who posted that item, assuming it's not you, requesting that they remove it.?

The way Facebook works its privacy settings these days, you automatically limit future posts to just Friends. But, you may not have the same settings on your past post. To lock out friends of friends from your frat party pictures, you'll need to:?

  1. Click the lock icon on the top right of your profile.?
  2. Click Limit Past Posts next to "Limit the audience for old posts on your timeline."
  3. Click Limit Old Posts. Note, this step cannot be easily undone, per a warning pop-up.?

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall is looking for its fifth football strength and conditioning coach in two years.

Joe Miday is leaving Marshall to take over Western Kentucky's strength program.

Miday spent six seasons with the Herd, taking over the head strength and conditioning position full time last February.

Marshall has had little success holding onto its strength coaches in recent years.

Miday spent six seasons with the Herd, taking over the head strength and conditioning position full time last February.

Marshall has had little success holding onto its strength coaches in recent years.
