Samsung announces Galaxy Note S Pen App Challenge winners!

The Samsung Galaxy Note S Pen App Challenge of which our very own Phil Nickinson was a judge, has now concluded, and the winners have been announced. The grand prize winner has scored $100,000 with second place pulling in $50,00 and third taking home $20,000. The goal was to create apps that make use of the Samsung Galaxy Note's S Pen in unique ways and according to Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile the results exceeded expectations both in terms of quantity and quality. The rise of smartphones hasn't been kind to makers of devices such as digital cameras, digital music players and portable GPS devices. Handsets with a rich selection of apps have been increasingly cannibalizing sales of these products, leaving few ways for these once hot holiday gift items to compete. In some cases, though, they have enabled functionality that was once envisioned for standalone products that either failed in the market or never went much beyond a niche audience. Here are five examples of failed devices that never made much headway. The concepts behind them, though, ultimately found acceptance on smartphones.

Sprint will activate LTE on the 800MHz band in 2014

Sprint's Steve Elfman has said that the company's intending to activate an LTE service over its 800MHz spectrum by 2014. Big Yellow's already received 3GPP certification to turn Band 26 into super-fast mobile internet, the only remaining regulatory hurdle left to overcome is a thumbs-up from the FCC. The due date isn't set in stone, as it'll depend entirely on how quickly the company can force current iDEN users to migrate to its CDMA Direct Connect service. Meanwhile, LTE service in Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City and San Antonio will activate across next year, with the company confident that it'll be able to keep pace with AT&T and Verizon's services by offloading traffic onto Clearwire's TD-LTE Network which should go live by June 2013. We can only guess that after that the announcement was done, Mr. Elfman looked at a picture of Philip Falcone and had to step outside for a little cry.

Soccer player defects from Cuba, requests asylum in US

Soccer player defects: A Cuban national soccer player disappeared while his team was playing in an Olympic soccer tournament in Tennessee.

Yosmel De Armas is a Cuban soccer player who has defected in order to seek asylum in the United States. While in Nashville, Tennessee last month for an Olympic qualifying soccer tournament, the Cuban midfielder was absent from his national team's final game against Canada, although he played on Saturday?s 4-0 loss to El Salvador.?

When asked why the player skipped the game, the Cuban national coach said De Armas was sick and remained at the team's hotel. However, when the team left Nashville, the promising soccer player did not accompany his teammates on their return trip to the island nation.

Although US officials refused to comment about the player?s whereabouts, it was reported that De Armas was last seen in Miami.?

"We're preparing an asylum application to file with the Department of Homeland Security," attorney Alex Solomiany said, according to Reuters.?

The Miami-based lawyer, who?described his client as "nervous," said De Armas is "alone here"?and that he was on his way to Miami at the time of the game, contrary to the coach's allegations.

A rising number of Cuban athlete defections are explained by several factors: the continuous financial hardship the populace faces in Cuba, the plethora of defection precedents that make the process look easy, and the luring prospects of a better life, all coalesce to urge young athletes to follow this path.?

"This is another case of a Cuban sportsman trying to get a decent life, to try to take control of his own career," Omar Lopez told Reuters.? Lopez is general director of the Cuban American National Foundation, a Miami-based organization of Cuban exiles who seek political change on the island.

Four years ago, seven members of the Cuban under-23 national soccer team also sought political asylum after competing against its US counterpart in Tampa, Florida.?

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Yenier Bermudez told the Miami Herald, according to ESPN.

Since the 2002 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) tournament in Los Angeles, a total of 15 Cuban soccer players abandoned their teams and requested political asylum in the United States.

Google named official social platform of 2012 Republican National Convention

It's no secret that Big G's tight with the federal government, whether it's White House staff hanging out on Google +, or the company giving us all a personal tour of Obama's abode. This time around, though, Larry Page & Co. have announced a partnership with the GOP which makes Mountain View the official social platform and livestream provider of the upcoming Republican National Convention. Essentially, this means Republicans at the gathering will use sites like YouTube and Google+ to stream live events and pop in at the occasional Hangout. That said, it wouldn't surprise us if attendees dabbled in that other social network, as it's no stranger to politics, either. Too bad Santorum's not around to try on those snorkeling goggles...

Canon unveils EOS-1D C and C500 4K Cinema cameras, two new lenses ahead of NAB (updated)

In a departure from its last introduction as dramatic as the C300's Hollywood launch itself, Canon has quietly announced two additional cameras to sit alongside the company's former lone flagship. You may have caught a glimpse of the EOS-1D C at the C300 launch, but what six months ago was a mere mock-up has actually become a reality, likely to ship sometime this year. More out of left field, however, is the C500 -- a higher-end version of the C300 that adds several shooting modes, dual 3G-SDI ports and a larger, permanent grip. Both cameras can capture 4K video, but in substantially different ways.

The $15,000 1D C, which has the same chassis and still shooting features of its less-abled cousin, the EOS-1D X, pipes 4096 x 2160 8-bit 4:2:2 video to a CF card at 24 fps. Unlike the X, however, the C swaps a headphone jack for the X's PC socket, that's usually used for hooking up strobes. The higher-end C500 requires a dedicated external recorder, but offers two full-RAW output options: 4096 x 2960, that will be better suited for motion picture capture, and 3840 x 2160 for 4K TV. Both of these modes offer 10-bit 4:4:4 at 60 frames-per-second. There's also a half-RAW option, at 4096 x 1080 or 3840 x 1080 resolutions, also 10-bit 4:4:4, but at 120 fps. The C500 also includes dual CF slots, but that recording option is only available for 1080p (which can be captured to CF concurrently). Both cameras support Canon Log Gamma, empowering colorists to correct color in post production with more versatility by capturing additional information and a higher dynamic range.

Alleged Oakland campus shooter: I'm 'deeply sorry'

One Goh, the man charged with killing seven people at the Oikos University Christian college in Oakland, California, has said he is ?deeply sorry? for the families of his victims, in an interview from jail.

?Families are so angry with me,? he told CBS San Francisco at the Santa Rita Jail, Calif. ?(But) if I tell them sorry, it doesn?t bring anybody back.?

Goh, 43, a native of South Korea and former student at the school, has been charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder at the Oikos University ? the deadliest U.S. campus attack since the shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007. He has not yet entered a plea.

Police have said Goh was targeting an administrator who had been involved in his financial dispute with the school.

When he learned she wasn't there, police say, he began shooting in classrooms. Police are also investigating whether Goh might have been seeking multiple targets.

CBS San Francisco reporter Julie Goodrich said that as they spoke, Goh kept his head down. His eyes were bloodshot and at one point he started to cry, she said.

She added that he spoke English clearly, despite accounts in the aftermath of the shootings that he had struggled with the language and was teased because of his lack of fluency.

?I was studying to be a nurse ? but it didn?t happen. It is complicated to explain,? he told her.

Meanwhile, the director of the nursing program at Oikos college, said her students don't want to return to the classroom building where the shootings took place.

Ellen Cervellon said Wednesday that nursing students at Oikos are still traumatized by the April 2 shooting and are looking for a new space off campus to hold classes. Instructors say they are not sure when classes will resume.

My thinking is Yes and No. Why?

In Bazi Chart you always divide into 3 components. Heaven, Earth and Man. Here I attach a typical Bazi or Phat Chee Chart.

If the the problems comes from the Heavenly?Stem then only He can help you or you just have to wait for the Right Timing. It is the part of Destiny that was handed to one since birth. So no matter what you do you just cannot avoid this part by our actions.

If the problem comes from Earthly Branches, then managing or changing a person?s character can help. There is a saying that ?Character is Destiny?. This statement is?true?if you look from the point of view of what one can do. This is where the a visit to the Self improvement sections of the book stores or Personality or Anger Management or self awareness program will do the difference. Having said this, of course we as the person has to work on it and?please allow time for changes to take place. Persistence and patience is what is required.

When we have the ?right? character we can alter the outcome.?Having said this, many?find?that this is the most difficult part of the task. Most people will give up or revert back to their original character when under stress. So how can one change his/her destiny if the character is not ?supportive?? It is going to be one hell of a bumpy ride isn?t it. But still possible! Effort x Time x Desire !!

And if Hidden stem is the issue, you will have to re-program your subconcious mind.?Positive self talk, attending motivational seminars, hynoptism, meditation and NLP (neuro linguistic programming) are some things you can do to improve your life. This is where preventive maintenance kicks in. Why Preventive? they are your hidden problems awaiting to explode. If you correct it now, when it happens it will have minimal effects on you. Get it?

So the answer is really Yes and No when it comes to correct a Bad Bazi.?Only You may manage/alter your destiny, not your spouse, your boss, your teacher nor your parents. So please don?t blame them for everything.

It is only your own desire to change and make a difference in this lifetime. Indeed life is a journey and not blocks of milestones or KPIs.

Isn?t knowing your bazi important? How do you improve if you don?t know the problems or where they are coming from?

Washington Post Launches Its First Real-Time Ad Campaign

Thanks in large part to its personalized news aggregation technology Trove, The Washington Post has recently launched new reading experiences like Social Reader and Personal Post. Now it's starting to use Trove on the advertising side too, creating ads that pull real-time content from social networks. Specifically, it's using this technology for a campaign from the Cleveland Clinic, which is the official sponsor of the TEDMED event (one of the independent, licensed TEDx conferences) in Washington, D.C. The ads will automatically pull headlines and tweets about the TEDMED conference into the clinic's display ads, and they're running on The Post's homepage starting today.. (The ads are targeted to a D.C. audience, so if, like me, you live outside the are, you won't see them.)
