College Football Preview - Week 5 Odds and Predictions

Oregon footballOur first foray into the world of wagering on college football did not go as planned, but there are some incredible week 5 matchups on the schedule that will be able to win us our money back. ?We'll go over the key games coming up on Saturday and see if we can't pick some winners to get our record back on the right side of .500.

Record against the point spread: 2-6?

(17) Clemson -7 at Boston College

The Tigers are a team that looks either great or terrible week-to-week, and this low point spread indicates they are destined to look terrible on Saturday. ?Let everyone else throw their money away on Clemson and go with the Eagles at home.

Louisiana Tech -3 at Virginia

There is a reason why a WAC team is a 3-point road favorite over a BCS Conference squad, and that is because Louisiana Tech should dominate Virginia on the weekend. ?Don't let the conference affiliations fool you. ?This less-heralded squad is for real.

(2) Oregon -30.5 at Washington State

The Ducks are winning with smoke and mirrors lately and they are not as good as advertised. ?That being said, Washington State is terrible and has no defense. ?Oregon puts up 60+ points here and that should be enough.

(15) Texas -2 at Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State will still likely be without star quarterback Wes Lunt, but is backup has looked strong and I think the home-team Cowboys win this game in a shootout.

(25) Baylor at (7) West Virginia -11.5

West Virginia has no business being favored by 11.5 against against a top-end Baylor offense considering the Mountaineers don't play much defense. ?This one will be high-scoring and could go either way.

(14) Ohio State at (20) Michigan State -2.5

The Spartans can't throw the ball, and that will hurt them here against a strong defense. ?They might be at home, but I think they are destined to lose against a squad that is better than them offensively.

Tennessee at (5) Georgia -14

I like Tennessee as a big underdog here and think their passing game will be able to move the ball on the Bulldogs. ?Georgia will score, but so will the Volunteers.

(4) Florida State -17 at South Florida

The Seminoles regularly have letdown games and I think they are in for one here against their in-state rivals. ?South Florida will be fired up and Florida State has major holes on defense that can be exploited.

Wisconsin at (22) Nebraska -12

The Badgers are a poor team but they match up perfectly against Nebraska. ?Wisconsin can stop the run which is what the Cornhuskers need to move the ball, and the Badgers should be able to run against Nebraska's iffy defense. ?

String of Iraq car bomb blasts kill at least 32

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bombings and shootings killed more than 32 people across Iraq on Sunday, underscoring the government's struggle with a stubborn insurgency more than nine months after the last U.S. troops withdrew.

In Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, bombs in three parked cars went off separately, killing 11 people and wounding 24, including several policemen.

Reuters footage of the scene of one of the explosions showed the remains of an exploded car surrounded by several completely and partially destroyed houses and cars.

Taji has one of Iraq's largest military airbases but the bombing hit a civilian neighborhood.

"A car bomb entered the area and no one... noticed this. Why did that happen? All the houses were destroyed," said Khadiar Abas, owner of one of the damaged homes.

In Baghdad, a suicide car bomb and two parked car bombs went off, killing eight people including a police officer and wounding another 11.

Another blast targeted a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims as it passed through the town of Madaen, about 30 km (20 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing two passers-by and wounding another ten, including seven Iranians.

A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up in the city of Kut, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing four policemen, police and local officials said.

No group claimed responsibility for the raft of attacks, but a local al Qaeda affiliate and other Sunni Islamist groups have carried out at least one major assault a month since the last American troops left in December.

Al Qaeda's local wing, the Islamic State of Iraq, says it has begun a new offensive against mainly Shi'ite targets. Security experts say it has benefited from the conflict in Syria, which has given al-Qaeda the pretext to seek more money and arms from Sunni tribes, politicians and governments.

Security had been tightened in Baghdad and other provinces after dozens of inmates, including convicted members of al Qaeda, fought their way out of a prison in the northern city of Tikrit on Friday using weapons officials said had been smuggled in during family visits.

Two more policemen were killed when a car bomb went off in the town of Balad Ruz, 90 km (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

In Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, a parked car bomb and two roadside bombs blew up separately, killing a civilian and wounding six.

The last major attacks occurred on September 9, in the capital when a series of bombs in mainly Shi'ite districts ended one of the bloodiest days of the year with more than 100 killed across the country.

Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian fighting killed thousands of people, but Sunni Islamists are still seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.

Hearing brains are 'deaf' to disappearance of sounds, study reveals

    Friday, September 28, 2012

Our brains are better at hearing new and approaching sounds than detecting when a sound disappears, according to a study published today funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.

Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.

Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' comprised of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or disappearance of different sound-objects within the melee.

Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound disappears. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.

Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the appearance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just disappeared. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps disappear. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'disappearance blindness'"

The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.

"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. For example, to aid the design of devices intended to help professionals such as air traffic controllers and pilots who operate in environments where the detection of change is critical," added Dr Chait.

The Best Advice On Mobile Marketing Like A Pro | Eric Chua : Life ...

Mass advertising is easy now that mobile marketing is on the scene. To learn how to market your business on mobile devices, which will reach more people than ever, read the tips and advice presented here.

Don?t squander your customers? limited attention. In your excitement and rush to use mobile marketing, remember to do things that have a purpose. Provide information that can help your customers and potential new customers. Build customer loyalty by providing your customers with what they want.

Examine what techniques your competitors are using via mobile marketing. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Find a way to differentiate yourself from you competitors.

TIP! Get yourself short codes that are dedicated as opposed to sharing them. They?re not cheap at about $2,000 but they can link to your brand.

You should have clear objectives before you launch a mobile marketing effort. It is important to know what your objectives are for your business and the ways to achieve those goals. Are you looking to monetize your existing customers more or are you attempting to get long term customer retention?

A/B testing can be a useful strategy in developing a mobile landing page. This will help you test which strategies work and which ones don?t, which is as crucial to mobile site development as it is to creating standard web pages. Create two different landing pages (A&B) to see which is more effective for conversions. Then when you find what works, add that to your end game strategies.

MMS, otherwise known as Multimedia Messaging Service, is an excellent tool that you can employ to deliver coupons in order to reward your customer base, or attract new customers. You can include certain promotional codes with the coupons that you send out. Codes that can be tracked can easily be linked to your online product pages. Coupons are useful in both gaining new customers and rewarding your loyal customers.

TIP! Adding maps to your website, that are mobile friendly, can help bring in new customers. Your maps can let them find your location quickly on their phone.

Almost everyone is familiar with the idea of offering free apps, but not everyone understands just how easy it can be to develop one that meets the needs of your business. You could offer apps specific to your business to better promote your company via mobile marketing. There are a lot of services that assist in designing apps, and a lot of features these apps could offer to your customers.

Be concise and user-friendly. Your customers should access the information they need in a few clicks. Remember that the keypad in mobile devices are very small and typing is not easy. Therefore, you want to keep the campaign to the absolute must.

    Mobile Marketing

TIP! When you design your campaign, make a plan to get your mobile marketing message across to different platforms. Do not exclude anyone from your campaign by neglecting a platform.

In the content area of your mobile marketing campaign, it?s important to keep the message short so it can be easily understood. Make all of your mobile marketing memorable and to the point.

Labor for your clients. Knowing the goals and desire of your buyers is the fundamental principle of mobile marketing. Without knowing your customers? interests, you can?t effectively provide products they?ll buy. Try and get as much information out of your customers, so you understand them and that will lead to success.

Your mission statement will help you design the best campaign possible. Having the mission statement around will help you stay ethical.

TIP! When doing this kind of marketing, you can?t go wrong by investing some money to ensure your website is well-optimized for mobile use. The constraints of mobile browsers make creating a nice-looking mobile site more difficult than creating a good traditional site.

Start by building a proper database. Do not slap customers? cell numbers onto your subscriber list just because you have access to them. You really need to get their permission before starting. Ask your existing online customers to join your mobile database, and give them a coupon for referring friends.

Use several marketing pieces at the same time to provide detailed information about an event for maximum effect. For instance, you can use direct mail to let them know about the upcoming event and any discounts that you plan to offer. Email your customers a little while before the event, then send then an SMS on the day of the event.

Don?t start a new mobile marketing campaign until you have had a chance to judge the success of your first one. To calculate the success you are getting, you should check your campaign longevity and not the sales numbers. Design new campaigns by using strategies that have been successful in the past.

TIP! Make sure that you add mobile friendly directions and maps to your website. A lot of people use mobile websites to help them to get to different locations.

Going viral is one of the best ways for your ads to be effective. They could recommend it to friends and family, which will increase your customer base.

    Qr Codes

For a great way to bring in customers and help your brand become more well-known, use QR codes in your campaigns. They can be used to share many things including both information about your product and discounts. They are easy to capture via a cellphone and easy to use. Incorporating QR codes into your mobile marketing campaign is a great way to get your customers the information they want without pestering them with messages.

TIP! An important key in your mobile marketing plan is conducting a test to see how usable it is to end consumers. It is very important that consumers see your content in the way you have intended.

Your advertising techniques always have room for improvement. You need to consider what your competition is doing as well. This article has provided some ideas to help you stay a step ahead with your mobile advertising campaigns

Facebook Gifts: Great for friends, bad for privacy?

Facebook?s 945 million users can now send actual gifts (not just virtual hugs and hearts) to their friends. But will this new feature lead people to over-share on Facebook?

    By Pamela Cyran / September 28, 2012

    A preview of Facebook Gifts.

    Facebook

Everyone loves when ?happy birthday? messages show up on their walls, but Facebook?s team realized what users would love even more: real, tangible gifts.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Facebook is all about sharing, whether it?s through comments, posts, links, videos, photos, or even game requests. Now users have something new to share, Facebook Gifts, which allows users to send and receive real presents with just a few clicks.

According to?Facebook?s announcement?Thursday afternoon, users can first choose a gift and attach a digital card to send to their friend through Facebook. The gift can post on their friend?s timeline or in a private message. The friend will then get to virtually unwrap the gift (and even make changes of equal value) before accepting it. The sender can choose to pay Facebook immediately, or wait until the friend accepts the gift and enters in the shipping information. The physical present arrives later in the mail.

Facebook partnered with various vendors and will continue to gradually add more. Pictures on the Facebook announcement show that the company already partnered with Starbucks and several bakeries. Other?pictures?show Angry Birds and Star Wars plushies as possible gifts.

?Facebook didn?t say in its release how the revenue from goods gets split between it and its partners, but its built-in audience of 945 million users is already a draw for many companies,? reports the Washington Post.

The Post also says that in order for Facebook Gifts to work, users will need to trust Facebook more than ever by willingly entering in addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers.

Considering Facebook?s prior history with privacy concerns, this may cause an issue.

In a report from Computer World, some security experts are concerned about the security and privacy implications of this new Facebook program.?Bogdan Botezatu, a senior cyber-threat analyst at antivirus vendor Bitdefender, said the amount of private information publicly shared on Facebook ?already exceeds all security precautions.?

Facebook users constantly update their statuses with information revealing where they are (now shown on a map with the feature, ?check in?), who they?re with, what they?re eating or wearing, and generally every detail about their daily adventures. Facebook critics say this is a big opening for stalkers.

"The new information that might be shared by users is particularly dangerous in the case of account compromise," says Botezatu in the Computer World article.

Home addresses combined with other information commonly shared could make it very easy for burglars to select potential victims and plan raids, he says.

Adam Levin, chairman and founder of Identity Theft 911, says users would be more open to sharing their birthdays, reported the Computer World article.

?Anytime you provide information to complete the mosaic of your life, you're putting yourself in harm's way,? says Levin in the article.?

FILE - In this Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, file photo, traders check the prices to begin trading on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks notched their first gain of the week Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, after Spain announced severe budget cuts intended to convince the world that it can meet deficit-reduction targets. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)

Stocks posted solid gains for the third quarter, although the ride got bumpy at the end.

Stocks fell five days of the last six, including on Friday, the last trading day of the quarter. But the big indexes are still up 4 percent or more for the three months. They're ahead 10 percent or more for the year.

That's despite all the anxiety about the euro, Iran and U.S. politics.

Actually, those worries are exactly why stocks are up, said Uri Landesman, who runs the Platinum Partners hedge fund. He notes that investors around the world feel that U.S. stocks look pretty good, compared to some of the alternatives.

"People are scared, and 2008 wasn't that long ago, and Europe remains a problem," he said. Those factors "are keeping the market up in the face of some really questionable economic data and questionable behavior by the Fed."

Investors got some more of that iffy economic data on Friday. The Commerce Department said consumer spending rose a half-percent last month, compared with July. That was a big jump ? but it was driven by higher gas prices, rather than by spending on clothing, electronics and general merchandise. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

The news pushed stocks lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48.84 points to close at 13,437.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.48 points to 1,440.67. The Nasdaq composite index fell 20.37 points to 3,116.23. The losses had been steeper in the morning before stocks recovered somewhat around midday.

Stocks fell in all industry groups in the S&P 500 except utilities. Telecommunications and information technology stocks had the biggest losses.

Many investors worry that the recent gains by stocks aren't justified, considering the risks of a confrontation with Iran, weak corporate profits, and Europe's troubles.

"People are wrestling with that disconnect, and trying to choose which chess pieces to move in anticipation" of whatever they think will happen next, said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

"It's been a good quarter," he said, "but at least for the day we seem to be limping across the finish line."

Investors are still concerned about Spain's financial health. The Bank of Spain released an audit Friday showing that seven of the country's banks failed stress tests. Moody's, the credit rating agency, is also expected to weigh in on Spain's creditworthiness, and there are concerns the government's rating will be cut to "junk" status.

Stocks in Europe fell. The CAC 40 in France fell 2.5 percent, the FTSE 100 in Britain was down 0.6 percent, and Germany's DAX fell 1 percent.

Stocks finished higher in Asia on continued speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

For the year so far, the Dow is up 10 percent, the S&P 500 up almost 15 percent, and the Nasdaq is up 20 percent.

Among U.S. stocks with noteworthy moves:

? Bank of America Corp. fell 14 cents, or 1.6 percent, to close at $8.83 after agreeing to pay $2.43 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit related to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch. The company was the best performer of the 30 stocks in the Dow during September, rising 10.5 percent. Home Depot was the best Dow stock for the third quarter.

? Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. jumped 36 cents, or 5 percent, to $7.50 after reporting a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on Thursday night.

? Shoemaker Nike fell $1.09, or 1.1 percent, to $94.91 after saying its first-quarter net income fell 12 percent because higher sales were offset by increased ad spending. The results were better than Wall Street had expected, but investors seemed more worried about the trail ahead for Nike rather than its performance in the last quarter.

? McDonald's Corp. fell $1.52, or 1.6 percent, to $91.75 after Janney Capital Markets cut its rating and price target, saying difficult year-ago comparisons may pressure sales at stores open at least 13 months, which is a key revenue metric for retailers.

The yield on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes fell to 1.629 percent.

Israel grounds to a halt for Jewish holy day

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel ground almost to a halt Tuesday afternoon in preparation for Yom Kippur, Judaism's holiest day of the year.

The country has completely closed its airspace to airplanes, shut down its buses and trains, and locked its border crossings in preparation the holy day, which begins Tuesday evening and ends Wednesday after sundown. Restaurants, businesses and schools closed, government ministries shuttered, and Israeli television and radio stations went silent. Highways and roads emptied of cars ? a convention honored even by most secular and non-Jewish Israelis.

Yom Kippur is Judaism's day of atonement, when devout Jews ask God to forgive them for their transgressions. They refrain from eating and drinking and attend intense prayer services in synagogues. The day caps a traditional ten day period of soul-searching that began with the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish new year.

This year, the day of introspection comes amid heightened speculation that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities could be near. When Yom Kippur comes to a close Wednesday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make his way to New York to address the United Nations with one main message: Iran's nuclear program is an existential threat to Israel, and it must be stopped.

Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar told Israel Radio that Israelis should pray this Yom Kippur that Israel's enemies be kept at bay.

"May God upturn whatever schemes they are scheming for us," Amar said.

Many Israelis also reflected on the 1973 Arab-Israel War, which Israelis call the Yom Kippur War because it broke out surprisingly on that day. The war marked a watershed moment in Israeli collective memory, when the country suffered heavy losses on the battlefield. On Tuesday, families published notices in the obituary section of newspapers in memory of their loved ones who died in the war.

Thousands of Jewish worshippers shrouded in white prayer shawls convened on the Western Wall Tuesday morning for last-minute penitent prayers. Some sounded long, curly rams' horns called shofars, traditionally sounded as a call to repent during the ten days of repentance.

Many of Israel's secular Jews fast for the day, but stay at home watching movies and playing board games. In another Israeli Yom Kippur tradition, secular children ride skateboards and bicycles through the empty streets.

At Jerusalem's outdoor market, many scurried around doing last-minute errands before the country shut down. Nearby, ultra-Orthodox Jews swung live chickens over their heads while reciting a blessing, then slaughtered the birds ? a symbolic ritual that transfers their sins to the animals. The practice has come under criticism in recent years, and many have replaced it by donating money to charity instead.

Adesu Masala, 72, an Ethiopian Jewish immigrant to Israel, was leaving the tailor's with a newly hemmed pair of dress pants to wear at his synagogue. He looked up to the heavens when he reflected on his prayers for the holy day.

"I will pray to God for a long life, and health for my children, wife and grandchildren," he said.

Tikva Horne, 70, was returning home from a visit to the doctor. She said she would be going to synagogue praying for "health for everyone, and that God forbid there will be a war."
