Last week we turned the spotlight on a few of our favorite Google search shortcuts that provide instant answers and helpful widgets with a single search string. We turned the mic over to you for more, and we got a few more to add to the list.
As we mentioned last week, these are little tricks that give you instant results for direct queries. These are different from search operators that allow you to focus in your search. Instead, these shortcuts are cool little tricks that get you an answer almost immediately. Better yet, if your phone supports Google Now, these are integrated right into it.
Get the Roster of Sports Teams
Adding onto the already long list of sports-related quick searchers, reader AdmoHoodRat14 adds that if you type "[sports team] [roster]" you get a handy list with the current roster. It's a little finicky on when it decides to work, but when it does it's an easy way to get a look at the star players.
Sports Mascots
Reader Katonk points out that you can also instantly find the name of a team mascot. Search for "[team name] [mascot]" and get the current team mascot.
Earthquakes Around the World
Our own Walter Glenn points out a simple, but useful trick. Type in "earthquake" and you'll get instant results for the most recent earthquakes around the world.
Dog Breed Characteristics
This is one of the more random quick results, but if you type "[dog breed] [temperament]" you'll get an instant result listing the breed's characteristics. It should come in handy when you're at a shelter picking out an animal.
Get the Latest Album from a Musician
We mentioned a few musician related quick search results last time, but Choncle adds another. Type "[artist] [latest album]" into search, and you'll get the name of the last album they released. Should be handy for those, "Is this their newest album?" moments.
Find out the President of Any Country
SeatbeltBlue shares a handy little trick to quickly find the current president of any country. Type in, "[country] [president]" and you get the most recent commander-in-chief of any country that has one.
Find Out What a UPC Code Is
DarkTormentor points out that when you type in a UPC code from any product you get a widget taking you directly to UPC Database.
3D Graphs
We mentioned the graph function before, but it turns out you can also get Google to do 3D graphs. Just type in a complex equation like "tanh(y(y^4+5x^4-10(x^2)(y^2))/(x^2+y^2)^4)" and you get a 3D graph.
Check Your IP Address
This one's a classic, but we missed in the last round up. Reader Mamona reminds us of one of quick search's best features. Type "what's my IP" into the search box and you get your current IP address. This is especially handy if you're using a VPN or Proxy and want to verify you're not broadcasting your real location.
Find Vacation Hot Spots
Not sure what you want to do on vacation? Type in "things to do in [city]" and Google displays a list of tourist attractions in most major cities.
These Google results are always expanding. Once you know how to structure your search, you can skip the endless scrolling through websites looking for the right answer and find everything you need in a single click.
