The final countdown to Sky Ride Leicester has begun and organisers are promising that there will lots to do for the thousands of cyclists expected, both on and off the bike.
Sky Ride returns to Leicester for its fourth year on Sunday, August 26, from 10am until 4pm.
Cllr Rory Palmer, Deputy City Mayor, said: ?Sky Ride is a great way of encouraging people to get out on their bikes. It is a celebration of cycling in the city and a really fabulous, fun day out for all ages.
?It?s been an amazing summer for cycling, with our athletes making sporting history again and again. Sky Ride is a great way for people to share that excitement for cycling with thousands of others, riding the streets of Leicester.?
The five mile (8km) traffic-free bike ride will follow the same route as last year?s event, which saw around 12,000 cyclists take part. The route links Abbey Park with the city centre, via the Belgrave flyover and Cultural Quarter, and takes in Leicester Market and the Town Hall Square.
There will be a huge range of entertainment along the route, with activity zones at Abbey Park, Leicester Market Place and the Leicester Mercury car park.
British Cycling will be bringing their bike village to Abbey Park, giving people a chance to experience all sorts of sport and recreational cycling. For fans of extreme sports, there will be a chance to ride the Northshore-style mountain bike course or have a go at launching the freestyle jumps. Competitive cyclists can take part in static roller-races and Watt bike challenges, and for the more sedate cyclists there will be tandem rides and a chance to sit back and watch bike films in the Nanoplex.
Abbey Park will also host a Disney children?s area where younger riders can get creative with Lloyd Warbey, presenter of Art Attack.
Last year?s popular Bikeability and scootability training sessions return to the Leicester Mercury car park, where people can also enjoy live music in the relaxed atmosphere of the Sound House picnic area.
Leicester Market will be transformed into the Sustrans Eco-hub for the day, with live music, food and lots of information about environmental charities and community groups.
The award-winning Motion Disabled: Unlimited will be on show at Curve. Created by Simon McKeown, the exhibition features motion-captured animations of some of the UK?s leading Paralympic athletes and will also bring the artist?s 10 metre-tall inflatable sculpture to Orton Square.
Leicester?s own BMX world champion and Internet sensation Keelan Phillips will be demonstrating his incredible riding skills at each the three activity zones throughout the day, starting at 10am on Abbey Park.
Free bike parking and check-ups will be on offer around the route, with free bike maintenance workshops from Future Cycles on offer at Town Hall Square, where children can decorate their Sky Ride bibs and get their faces painted.
Janet Hudson, British Cycling recreation manager for the East Midlands, said: ?Sky Ride has something to offer everyone, regardless of any previous cycling experience. There will be loads of activities taking place where people can test their skills or just take a break. It?s a fantastic, family-friendly event and everyone?s invited.?
Anyone registering for Sky Ride Leicester will be entered into a draw for some top prizes. Details, route maps and online registration are available at www.goskyride.com/leicester
Riders can pick up free bibs at Abbey Park or the Town Hall Square during the Sky Ride, although people can join the event at point on the route.
Sky Ride Leicester is organised by Leicester City Council in partnership with British Cycling, Sky and NHS Leicester City.
