Greenbelt Arts and Entertainment for August 10-19 | Greenbelt Live

This is a weekly preview of arts and entertainment-related events IN Greenbelt, MD, or anywhere else if they showcase Greenbelt artists or entertainers. It covers this weekend through the following weekend.

- Jazz and blues piano by Takoma Park?s own John Guernsey, 6:30 to 8 pm at the New Deal Cafe.

- Greenbelt Youth Circus shows start today and continue through the weekend.? Forty kids perform circus acts inspired by Hollywood, under the direction of Gregory May.? 7 p.m. at the Greenbelt Community Center. Tickets, already close to selling out, are $5 and can be purchased over the phone with a credit card at (301) 397-2208 or at the door with cash, check, or credit card, if the show is not sold out.? It?s recommended that you come 30 minutest before the show to get tickets; but there is still the risk of them being sold out.? Below is a video from last year?s Circus.

Penelope Shawn is a very pretty, very appealing young girl who has a most unusual profession:? she?s a burglar.? When David Warren finds her attempting to rob his apartment, he decides it?s up to him to reform her.? At 8:00.? Ticket prices:? $17 general admission; $14 for seniors and students.?Buy Tickets

- ?Lysistrata? (adapted and directed by Jaki Demarest) opens at the Greenbelt Arts Center.?? The year is 1969, baby, and the Sock Puppet Guerilla Theater is working to win hearts and minds and end the Vietnam War with their staging of a swinging sex comedy, Aristophanes? masterpiece, Lysistrata. This summer, trip and groove with us back to an age of free love, man, an Age of Aquarius in which world peace didn?t feel so impossible. Bring us your beads, your headbands, your tie die, your secret optimism, and get ready to make love, not war.? Playing at 8:00.?? Ticket prices: $17 General Admission, $14 Students/Seniors? -Darbuka Dawg Hafla.? Join us for an afternoon of live Middle Eastern music & dance. Musicians will play exotic instruments such as qanun, oud, darbuka, and riq.? 5 to 7 pm at the New Deal Cafe.? This is a true Extravaganza of Middle Eastern Music and Dance that happens once a month here at the New Deal ? a very rare chance to see belly dancing performed to a live band!!? From the band?s Facebook page:? ?Suggested donation $10. Your contributions to the tip jar will help our local, dancer-friendly musicians feel appreciated!
